The fight continues to save as many cats and kittens that were pulled from gruesome conditions in one Suffolk County home over the weekend.

Sixty-one very sick animals are currently being held in a trailer outside the Islip Town Animal Shelter in Central Islip, awaiting lifesaving treatment.

The Suffolk SPCA says it needs at least $10,000 in donations to provide medications and supplies for the sick cats. They're also urging veterinarians and vet techs to contact them as soon as possible if they're able to offer any type of services.

On Saturday afternoon, firefighters responded to a home on Westminster Drive in Bohemia for a foul ammonia smell. Once inside, they made the shocking discovery.

Twenty-eight cats were found dead; dozens were being kept in a freezer and others in a box spring, according to officials. The home was covered with urine and feces all over the floors and walls.

Sixty-one very sick cats were pulled from the home in need of lifesaving support.

The Bohemia Fire Department condemned the house.

The homeowner has not been charged and declined to comment over the weekend.

A spokesperson for the Town of Islip provided the following statement:

“We are accepting any and all donations such as blankets, food, as well as monetary donations to assist in the medical care of the cats.”

Officials expect treatment to begin on Tuesday and anyone who can help is asked to contact the Suffolk County SPCA at (631) 382-7722.

The SPCA said this is still an active investigation.
