Suffolk County police had to use their own patrol cars to stop an unconscious driver in Medford Friday afternoon.
Police say they received calls around noon about a 1998 Ford Expedition traveling eastbound at 20 miles an hour down the center lane of the Long Island Expressway. When police caught up to the vehicle around exit 63, they found 38-year-old Southampton resident Stephen Nielsen passed out behind the wheel of the moving car.
Police say they had to use their patrol cars to stop the vehicle, but were still unable to wake Nielsen. Fearing he was having a medical emergency, officers broke into the car where they say they found a crack pipe. Nielsen was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital before being charged with driving under the influence of drugs.
