Suffolk County police are facing a civil federal lawsuit in connection to an alleged assault at a Dix Hills graduation party.
The suit claims Cindy O'Pharrow was assaulted at the party in June 2021 because she is African American.
The lawsuit says O'Pharrow was trying to help a gunshot victim at the time and that she was left with physical and emotional injuries.
She is seeking up to $60 million.
At the time, Suffolk officials said an internal affairs investigation found no evidence to back O'Pharrow's story.
"The allegation that officers physically assaulted this individual for no reason is false," Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone says. "The evidence indicates that the officers acted in the best interest of this victim."
O'Pharrow's attorney told News 12 that "Mrs. O'Pharrow, who is very supportive of police officers, should never have been mistreated as she was. This is especially true when all she wanted to do was help. Justice must be the ultimate goal."
