An argument between an 80-year-old woman and a driver
resulted in a fatal hit-and-run Sunday night in West Islip, police say.
The incident happened on Tanglewood Road around 9:30 p.m.
Police say the Helga McNulty exited the vehicle after the
argument. Investigators say the driver then backed up and slammed into her and
fled the scene, destroying a fence in the process.
McNulty was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with extensive
injuries. She was later pronounced dead.
Police say they have the vehicle that was involved in the
crash, and they know the driver’s identity.
Police said the woman and the driver knew each other but
did not elaborate. No arrests have been announced.
"It's very disturbing that it happened," said the
victim's neighbor Davorka Linich. "I mean this is the most safe and quiet
neighborhood."
