Suffolk Police Officer Brendon Gallagher, who was critically injured earlier this month in a Long Island Expressway crash, will be released from Stony Brook University Hospital on Monday.

Officer Gallagher, a member of the anti-street takeover task force, was severely injured on Jan. 5 when authorities said he attempted to pull over a speeding driver on the Long Island Expressway.

Police said that driver struck Gallagher’s SUV, causing it to hit a tree and overturn.

Suffolk County Acting Police Commissioner Robert Waring told News 12 at the time that the police car was so badly damaged that it took more than 30 minutes to remove Gallagher from the vehicle. The officer was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center where doctors say he was in severe shock and suffered extensive blood loss, among other severe injuries.

Doctors say Gallagher, who was stabbed 3 years ago in the line of duty in Medford, was in the ICU on a ventilator.

Suffolk police issued a news release on Sunday night:

“Miraculously, after 22 days in the hospital, Officer Gallagher will be released from the hospital to continue recovering at home. Members of the department will be on hand to support the officer and wish him well.”

Cody Fisher, the driver accused of sideswiping Gallagher, was on probation for a weapon's charge, according to investigators. Authorities say he drove at approximately 95-100 mph and was under the influence of drugs. The judge set bail at $1 million cash or $2 million bond.
