Suffolk County police have not yet released the identities of the two people killed in a Smithtown house fire, which injured a third person,
over the weekend.
Officials have only confirmed a man and a woman died before firefighters could get to them after the fire started at 178 Fifty Acre Road South around 3:15 p.m. yesterday.
Neighbors said multiple people rented rooms at that home.
Suffolk County police identified a third person who was inside the house when the fire started as Ronald Montagna, 91, who was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with burns and smoke inhalation. Officials have not updated his current condition.
The St. James Fire Department said it took 80 firefighters from eight departments about two hours to get the fire fully under control.
The Suffolk County police arson and homicide squads continue to investigate the cause of the fire this morning, but believe it was not criminal.
