The headlights that come with many vehicles are not bright enough, according to a study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The IIHS recently studied 82 headlight options featured in 31 midsized cars. Just one vehicle, the 2016 Prius V, earned a "good" rating. Ten car and headlight combinations performed so badly that they received a "poor" grade.
AAA legislative analyst Alec Slatky says that while automakers bear much of the responsibility for the poor performance of headlights, federal, state and local laws make it difficult to fix the problem, as well.
The IIHS says that a vehicle's price has no bearing on the quality of its headlights. In fact, several of the headlights that received the poorest grades belong to high-end, luxury vehicles.
