Students
at Bay Shore High School told News 12 that it was “disgusting” to hear that an
unauthorized recording device was found in a bathroom at the school on
Thursday.
Students
say the bathroom where it was located is near where the fall drama
production has been preparing for this weekend's shows, which made
that hallway busier than normal.
“I
heard about it in school, but I
didn't actually believe it was true,” said Emma
Levine, a senior. “This morning, I found out it was in the chorus bathroom, and
I'm like, ‘Oh wow, I use that all the time.'”
Another
student said the bathroom was being used as a changing room for the
school play.
Bay
Shore High School told News 12 it immediately notified police. Superintendent
Dr. Steven Maloney released a statement saying in part:
“The
Bay Shore School District takes matters like this very seriously and is
cooperating with the Suffolk County Police Department to identify the
responsible person. Any individual found to be involved will be addressed in
accordance with District policies and may be subject to criminal charges.”
Officials
have not specified what type of recording device it was. It’s not immediately
clear if it recorded audio, video or both.
What
is clear is the concern among those whose privacy may have been violated.
“It is
scary because whoever this person might be could have pictures of me and my
friends and people I consider family – and it’s really scary especially that
most of us are minors,” said Levine.
