As students head back to the classroom, school leaders in Pleasantville say families can play an important role in helping children adjust both academically and emotionally.
Principal Joseph Palumbo says parents’ first instinct may be to immediately solve a child’s problems, but sometimes the most helpful thing they can do is simply listen and give their child space to talk about what they’re experiencing.

If a student continues to struggle, Palumbo encourages families to reach out to their school rather than handle the situation alone. Teachers can provide support, while resources including student assistance counselors and school psychologists are available for students who may need additional help.
Students say having a strong support system at school can also make the transition back to the classroom easier, and they feel they are receiving adequate support.
School leaders encourage parents who notice their child struggling for an extended period to contact the school directly and take advantage of the available resources.
