A student who brought a gun inside East Brooklyn High School Monday morning was taken into custody, police say.
They say the 17-year-old boy was found with the gun just before 10 a.m. at the school located on Kings Highway. There were no shots fired or injuries reported.
The Department of Education is praising a hero student who notified administrators of the weapon.
In a statement, it said, "The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority, and all students and staff are safe. NYPD and school staff safely recovered this item after a brave student voiced a concern. We followed all safety procedures, and we are working closely with the NYPD regarding follow-up actions.”
Sources tell News 12 the school has two safety resource officers inside the building, and students do not have to cross through a metal detector to get inside.
Residents near the school expressed relief that no one was harmed and were shocked about how and why a weapon made its way inside a school.
"How are these teenagers getting guns? Where are the parents who don't know what's going on in the home, and what is going on in their lives that they feel so unsafe to walk outside with a weapon?" said Brownsville resident Shamisha Foster, who is a mother of five children.
She says that although her kids do not attend the school, she is glad the student spoke up.
"That's a brave thing that baby did, to say something, to save lives," she added.
No charges have been released, and police are not releasing the identity of the minor.
The incident comes just weeks following a school shooting threat made at a high school in Queens.
