Authorities renamed a street Monday in honor of an NYPD officer from Massapequa who was fatally shot while guarding the home of a witness in a drug case.
Officer Ed Byrne was 22 years old at the time. On the 30th anniversary of his death, 91st Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, became Edward Byrne Avenue. The street runs in front of the 103rd Precinct, where Byrne worked.
"People will remember the story of this young officer, a life and a career cut too short -- but a life and a career that made a difference," said NYPD Deputy Commissioner Lawrence Byrne, Edward Byrne's brother.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill also attended the ceremony.
