A new program in Nassau County driven by young adults is providing grocery delivery service to senior citizens.

Many senior citizens with underlying health conditions are fearful of going grocery shopping, but the new program has young adults and students shopping for them.

The senior citizens give the volunteers their grocery lists, and the students shop and hand-deliver the groceries.

Among those helping out are Zac Schulman and Shannon Mackey, students who are studying to eventually become part of the medical field. But for now, they're helping out in a different way.

"We need to keep them out of the store because these are the people who are most at risk to this virus," says Mackey.

"It's great to be able to do something as simple as go to the grocery store for someone," says Schulman. "Never in my life did I think it would be an act of service, but grocery stores right now are probably one of the most stressful places in the community for someone to go."

The program was created by Legislator Josh Lafazan, of Nassau's 18th District. He says about 200 volunteers are in the program – most of whom are college and high school students.
