An 83-year-old man suffered a broken hip in a deer attack in Calverton last week.
The incident occurred on Oct. 17 on Twomey Road.
Michael Koke told News 12 that he was driving by when he saw a man, John Rives, lying on the ground near his car and a deer attacking him.
Koke first tried to drive his car toward the buck in hopes of making it run away. When that didn't work, he jumped out and tried to scare the deer. He then dialed 911 and some called some co-workers to help him deal with the situation.
"It kept trying to bite him. It kept going at him until I shooed the deer away. And then it still kept coming back," said Koke.
When the ambulance arrived, the deer finally took off and Rives was taken to the hospital.
The Department of Environmental Conservation is calling on residents to be cautious around wild animals. Officials did admit that a deer attack is a rare occurrence.
DEC officers say they captured a deer in the area and is being held at an undisclosed location. The deer's fate is unknown, and it is not clear if it is the actual deer that was involved in the attack.
Wildlife experts are reminding residents that feeding and approaching deer or other wild animals does more harm than good.
