Elmont could be getting a full-service LIRR stop to go along with the proposed arena at Belmont Park.
The new train station would be located between the Queens Village and Bellerose stations, just east of the Cross Island Parkway.
The proposal is expected to cost about $105 million. The bulk of the cost is being covered by the developers of the proposed Belmont arena. The remaining $8 million will come from the state.
The project has been controversial for civic associations in Elmont. Some are worried that the community could be taken advantage of.
"Everything is being built in Elmont," one resident said. "The arena is in Elmont. Our racetrack is in Elmont. The train station is going to be in Elmont. We have a lot of needs and wants and they need to be addressed."
According to a project analysis released by the governor's office, the project will create approximately 10,000 construction jobs, 3,200 permanent jobs and generate nearly $50 million in new public revenue annually.
New York state today certified the environmental impact statement for a new Islanders arena.
