A North Hempstead town councilwoman is hoping to unseat the sitting Republican state senator in the 7th District.

It was a busy day of campaigning for Democratic challenger Anna Kaplan. She says state Sen. Elaine Phillips has not pushed hard enough in Albany for gun control, women's reproductive rights and could have brought more dollars back to area schools.

“I really believe people want change. They want the legislation that is beneficial to them to pass,” she told News 12.

State Sen. Phillips disagrees with Kaplan, saying she’s done great things for the 7th Senate District, which covers the northern portion of Nassau County from Floral Park to Port Washington to Hicksville.

“My job is to advocate for the people here on Long Island,” says Phillips. “It is not just school districts. It’s been record funding for village roads, for special grants for security for our schools, for roofs for our schools, for nonprofit organizations.”

With Republicans holding a one-vote margin in the state Senate, many will be watching for the outcome of this race.
