The Suffolk County Water Authority has been notified about a potential scammer in Brentwood.
The SCWA says it has received a customer complaint about a person who has been asking for permission to enter people's homes under the guise of "testing the water quality."
Officials say the water authority would not arrive at a home unannounced without an appointment.
The SCWA says the scammer is distributing business cards to residents which read "Long Island Water Quality Eng."
News 12 searched the internet for that name and nothing showed up. News 12 reporter Virginia Huie also called the number on the card.
A man who answered the phone said that his company is located in California even though he has a 631 area code. He also said that he goes door-to-door to conduct water testing “for free.”
He couldn’t not answer many questions and soon hung up.
The water authority says to be wary of anyone coming unannounced asking to provide a service.
