State investigators are looking into whether the death of an 11-month old child in the operating room of Stony Brook University Hospital last week has anything to do with a serious problem the hospital was supposed to have fixed.
Officials say a 6-day-old baby died in 2002 after receiving a lethal overdose of Potassium Chloride. Another baby nearly died in 1995 after she was given 10 times the proper dose of morphine. Misplaced decimal points were blamed in both incidents.
Attorney David Raimondo says a lot of money was spent to fix the medication problems and that the hospital went to computers on every level to prevent such mistakes from happening again. Hospital officials have not released a cause of death.
