Stony Brook Medicine is celebrating five years of its mobile stroke unit program.
There are two mobile stroke units strategically located off the Long Island Expressway.
The units have responded to nearly 8,000 calls.
They look like ambulances but are equipped with more than a typical ambulance.
Ralph Sabatino, of Saint James, suffered a stroke in 2023 and says thanks to the mobile stroke unit and Dr. David Fiorella, he has had “no impact” on his life as a result of the stroke.
“It’s a miracle," said Sabatino's wife, Claire, about her husband’s successful outcome.
She said Dr. Fiorella is considered an “angel” to everyone in their family who hasn’t met him.
