The New York State Comptroller’s Office is encouraging locals to check for unclaimed funds this month.
Brooklyn has some of the most unclaimed money, which is currently over $1.2 billion.
Officials say Brooklyn has more than $537 million, while Westchester has more than $480 million.
The money can come from old bank accounts, uncashed checks, utility deposits, trust funds or even unused gift cards.
New York State Comptroller’s Office of Unclaimed Funds returns an average of over $2 million in lost money each day.
Community events to provide assistance to New Yorkers are being held across the state this month.
Residents can also use the online claiming system of call 1-800-221-9311.
