Sprouts Farmers Market set to open first New York location in Centereach

Sprouts Farmers Market says it combines the best of a farmers market with the convenience of a neighborhood grocery store.

A new kind of supermarket is opening its doors in Centereach, and it’s part of a growing shift in the grocery business.

Sprouts Farmers Market will officially open its first New York state location on Middle Country Road on Friday morning, offering shoppers a farmers-market-style alternative to traditional supermarkets.

Unlike many large grocery chains, Sprouts is designed to feel open and easy to navigate. The aisles are lower, allowing customers to see across the store, and the focus is on fresh, local produce and items such as antibiotic-free chicken.

“We’re not your typical grocer,” said Mychael Ramirez, of Sprouts Farmers Market. “We want to provide that farmers market feel seven days a week, rain or shine, and that’s reflected in our stores. It’s why they’re bright, they’re light, they’re airy.”

The Centereach opening comes as the supermarket industry continues to evolve. While some long-standing grocery chains have closed locations, newer markets are moving in—often by specializing in specific products or shopping experiences.

That strategy appears to be resonating with Long Island shoppers. Thousands lined up when Wegmans opened its Lake Grove location last year, drawn in part by its extensive selection of ready-to-eat meals and specialty foods.

Marketing experts say this kind of differentiation is becoming increasingly important.

“Successful businesses are the ones that stand out, that offer something unique to consumers,” said Stacey Finkelstein, a marketing professor at Stony Brook University. “You will definitely see a shift toward stores that are specializing more to meet the needs of specific consumer segments.”

Sprouts’ Centereach store marks the company’s entry into the New York market, and some local residents say they’re eager to see what it offers.

“I’m excited that it’s coming to town,” said Lynne LaPolla of Miller Place, who works in Centereach. “I look forward to going.”

Sprouts Farmers Market will open to the public Friday morning at 7 a.m.
