Suffolk SPCA detectives are warning pet owners to keep animals inside during these dangerously cold temperatures or face legal consequences.
The announcement comes after the arrest of Dominick Sala, of Dix Hills.
He is accused of leaving his dog tied up outside Thursday night in below freezing temperatures.
First time offenders can get a $250 fine and up to five days in jail.
"If the dog is old or if the dog is very young, the dog could die. It could get hypothermia very quickly, depending on the breed, depending on the amount of coat that's on it," says SPCA Detective Dominic Mozzone.
