Firefighters responding to a fire at a house in Hauppauge discovered 27 dogs living in deplorable conditions, according to the SPCA.
Fire officials called the SPCA after firefighters found the dogs at a home on Joyce Drive Saturday evening.
Officials say all the dogs were dachshunds and some needed emergency medical care.
The SPCA says the animals were covered in feces and urine. Some were dehydrated, some had eye issues, and some of the dogs had lice.
Authorities say the house has been condemned. The owner, who has not been identified, has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty.
The dogs were taken to the Islip Town Animal Shelter and to Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter in Port Jefferson Station.
