Scandal suspicions arose from the Smithtown Building Department as the town board suspended Chief Building Inspector Robert A. Bonerba Tuesday.
Bonerba was not present when the board suspended him for 30 days for failing to submit financial disclosure papers required of all elected and appointed officials. Bonerba's suspension extends past the date of his retirement, for which he requested an effective date of December 31.
Although the Suffolk County District Attorney's office released few details, an investigation into Bonerba's potential building department corruption has been opened. A subpoena to confiscate written records has also been issued.
