An 8-year-old girl and her older brother attended Hempstead High School's prom Tuesday night in honor of their brother, who was killed in 2015.
Ka'Juan Polley, 15, was an accomplished athlete who had dreams of playing college basketball. He was killed by an unlicensed driver while riding his bicycle. He would have graduated this year.
As a tribute, the school invited his younger sister Jazaira and older brother Ju'Juan to attend prom in his place.
Jennifer Smith, the siblings' mother, called the night bittersweet.
"I'm happy to see them go in Ka'Juan's place, but also it's hard because I'm not getting him ready," she said.
Ju'Juan skipped his prom last year. He said he went this time for his brother.
The prom was held at the Crescent Beach Club in Bayville.
