A sixth grade teacher at Albert G. Prodell Middle School in Shoreham died suddenly Thursday, two days after suffering a medical episode on campus in front of students.
In a letter to the community, Shoreham-Wading River Superintendent of Schools Gerard Poole wrote, "Adrian Gilmore was not only a dedicated and passionate educator, but an outstanding coach, mentor and source of inspiration to many generations of SWR colleagues, families and students."
On Tuesday, district officials sent a message out to parents alerting them that a staff member had suffered a "medical emergency" after school hours at the middle school where students were present and witnessed the event.
Suffolk County police said they responded to the school around 2:55 p.m. on April 22. Gilmore, who was not named at the time, was transported by Rocky Point EMS to John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson.
Officials have not shared more details about the incident or how Gilmore died.
According to the district, Gilmore led several Shoreham-Wading River varsity soccer teams to county and state championships. She also earned multiple Coach of the Year awards, including recognition in 2019 as the United Soccer Coaches Regional High School Coach of the Year for the East Region. She previously coached lacrosse.
"More than her impressive achievements, Adrian will be remembered as a mentor for other coaches and teachers, a passionate advocate for children and a trusted colleague whose impact reached far beyond school walls," Poole wrote.
According to a GoFundMe page, Gilmore was a mother and wife. She leaves behind her husband Tim and their children.
"Adrian’s life was a beautiful reflection— full of grace, strength, and a deep love for others. She poured her heart into everything she did, whether she was raising her children, nurturing her students, or guiding her athletes," the GoFundMe reads.
The page has already raised more than $75,000 in 12 hours.
The Shoreham-Wading River School District is offering grief support and counselors to students and staff.
Officials said they will honor Adrian in the coming days to remember her legacy.
"Please keep Adrian’s family and friends in your thoughts." Poole wrote. "Together, we will continue to support one another with compassion as we navigate this loss as a school community and school family."
