The first tribally owned and licensed tax-free cannabis dispensary on Long Island opened for business Wednesday.

The Shinnecock Indian Nation’s dispensary, Little Beach Harvest, has been years in the making. It’s located on Montauk Highway in Southampton.

Dozens waited in anticipation for the doors to open. Launcelot Gumbs said, “It’s way more than just cannabis. These are people’s livelihoods.” Kimber Arezzi told News 12 she made the drive from Farmingdale to be there for the big day. She said it was a “historic” moment for Long Island.

Shinnecock Nation Chairman Bryan Polite said the business is all about cultural pride, economics and educating people about the Shinnecock Nation.

The Shinnecocks have their own regulatory board, but Polite said they are closely aligned with New York state laws. Under New York state law, you must be 21 years old to purchase marijuana and the maximum amount allowed is 3 ounces.
