Sen. Kim reflects on 5th anniversary of US Capitol insurrection

Tuesday marked the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol.
Protesters stormed the federal building and demanded the results of the 2020 election be overturned. The Capitol was put on lockdown and it took several hours for it to be secured.
Additionally, lawmakers evacuated the House and Senate chambers.
In the aftermath of the incident, Sen. Andy Kim – who was a House representative at the time – posted a photo of himself cleaning up the Capitol building. The picture went viral shortly afterward.
“I often say, to defile and disgrace the Capitol building is to defile and disgrace our Constitution, so I hope people across the political spectrum can recognize that the actions that took place on Jan. 6, five years ago, should never have happened and should never happen again,” Kim told News 12 this week. “I wish that was something that we can have as a universal across our country, but unfortunately, that's not the case.”
More than 1,000 people were charged in connection with the incident. However, they were later pardoned by President Donald Trump when he took office again in 2025.
