School boards across Long Island are wrestling with a new state law that permits them to grant property tax exemptions for veterans.

Last December, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill allowing local school boards to give veterans a 10-15 percent property tax exemption in addition to the STAR program.

The American Legion says Levittown, Island Trees, Wantagh, Valley Stream, Oceanside, Rockville Centre and Hicksville have approved the exemption, while only Lynbrook so far has rejected it. Dozens of other Long Island districts have yet to make a decision.

Some school boards, such as Seaford, have not yet acted, which has angered veterans groups. School boards must act before next Friday. The Massapequa School District will hold a public hearing regarding the exemption on Thursday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at Berner Middle School. 

According to the American Legion, there are 80,000 veterans living in Nassau County and 110,000 in Suffolk County who could benefit from the school property tax exemption.
