A pair of Romanian Nationals are facing grand larceny charges, accused of running a scam stealing people's necklaces across Nassau County.

Nassau County police said a 73-year-old woman was standing in front of her home in Valley Stream on Monday, Oct. 5, when a male driver and a female passenger pulled up in a gold Mitsubishi and asked for directions to the BJ's Wholesale Club.

After getting directions, the woman in the passenger seat got out, hugged the victim, placed two gold-colored necklaces around the victim's neck and drove away.

Quickly, the victim realized her actual gold necklace, valued at around $2,000, was gone.

Nassau County police investigated and this morning said they arrested Mirabela Lacatusu, 26, and Rudi Lacatusu, 28.

Investigators said they were responsible for pulling off similar necklace theft scams in Franklin Square on Aug. 25 and East Meadow on Aug. 26.

Nassau County police charged the pair with three counts of fourth-degree grand larceny. They were both issued appearance tickets for court on Oct. 20.

Detectives are asking anyone else who feels they may have been a victim of this scam to contact Nassau County Police Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
