A road in Rockville Centre has been ripped up to replace an aging water main, and business owners in the area say the behind-schedule project is making a mess out of the area.
Carol Hoenig, who opened her wine and book shop Turn of the Corkscrew a year ago, says construction on North Park Avenue has shut down the street for several months, creating such an inconvenience for customers that they stopped coming to her shop.
She claims the most she has lost in sales might force her to close down. She has set up a GoFundMe page in hopes that the community can help keep her doors open.
Since May, crews have been replacing old water mains and resurfacing the road. Some store owners say they were under the impression that the work would not last as long as it has.
The mayor of Rockville Centre says large, underground infrastructure projects takes time, and that there was never a definitive timeline for the work.
Crews have already completed work on new sidewalks and street lights. The mayor says construction should wrap up within the next month.
