Rockland County executive proposes property tax rate cut in 2025 budget

Because Democrats now have a supermajority in the Rockland Legislature, they have the power to make the county executive's life difficult over this budget, but several told News 12 they have no plans to play political games to drag out the process.

In his $876 million proposed budget, Rockland County Executive Ed Day is seeking a 2% property tax rate reduction, a 10% funding increase for local nonprofits, and up to $6,000 in college tuition assistance for each volunteer firefighter.

Day said his budget team has been disciplined and used federal grant money the right way.

"Most of the things we're paying for – we found ways to cover those costs without going to the taxpayers," he said after Tuesday's announcement at the Robert Yeager Health Complex in Pomona," and in fact, we cut property taxes again this year."

As the Rockland County Legislature and the public review the budget this fall, Day – a Republican – plans to work closely with Democratic legislators.

Because Democrats now have a supermajority, they have the power to make the county executive's life difficult over this budget, but several told News 12 they have no plans to play political games to drag out the process.

"I do believe it might go smoothly," Legislator Dana Stilley said. "There might, of course, be a little bit of asks from the legislature that are not included in what was presented to us, but I think it will go smoothly."

The Legislature can make changes to the budget before they vote on it in early December.

County Executive Day may then veto some, or all, of the Legislature's changes, but the supermajority could override Day's vetos.
