Honor Flight Long Island showed appreciation for veterans by raising money for flights to war memorials in Washington, D.C.
Nassau Poet Laureate and former Marine Corps Sgt. Evelyn Kandel, of Glen Gove, was the guest of honor at Saturday's fundraising event, "Listen To The Wind,” in Sagaponack.
More than 70 years after she served, Kandel is on a new mission. She's recruiting people to help honor veterans from Long Island by providing them with a special trip to see the war memorials in the nation's capital.
“I've always been proud of the time I spent in the Marines,” she says.
Kandel channels her pride in the service in a mission to help give fellow veterans a trip of a lifetime through Honor Flight.
The nonprofit program provides veterans with free flights for daylong sight-seeing tours of the World War II Memorial, the Korean War monument and the Vietnam Memorial Wall.
For many of the veterans, it is the first time they are able to see the memorials honoring their service.
As a veteran herself, Kandel understands how much this experience means to those who served.
All the proceeds will benefit Honor Flight and enable more veterans to see their memorials.
