Residents in Amity Harbor neighborhood clear road themselves following blizzard

After more than 20 inches of snow blanketed Irving Road in Amity Harbor, frustrated residents say they took matters into their own hands, firing up snow blowers and shoveling by hand, as they waited for the Town of Babylon to plow the street.

Residents living on Irving Road in Amity Harbor say they were left to dig themselves out after this week’s powerful blizzard, claiming their street was never plowed.

Jim Ranker, who has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years, said he can only remember two other times when the road was not cleared.

“They’re usually pretty good. The last snowstorm, they did a great job. But this is just too much for anybody, really,” he said.

With more than 20 inches of snow covering Irving Road, Ranker said neighbors decided to take matters into their own hands early Tuesday morning.

“At about 6:30 this morning, I had a snow blower out there. My stepson came down and we shoveled what we could by hand, just to get the cars out of the driveway,” Ranker said.

Several other neighbors, who spoke off camera, said the last time they saw a plow on their street was Sunday night.

“We saw trucks driving around, but nobody came down this street. Is it that they looked down the street and said, ‘That looks good’? The other side of it is that they are crazy busy. But at this time, there are no more trucks driving around. It’s kind of like, ‘Are we done here?’” Ranker said.

The Town of Babylon said it did plow Irving Road on Tuesday and that crews will resume plowing at 3 a.m. Officials said Irving Road is at the top of the priority list.
