Residents in one Port Chester neighborhood are calling for a safer design of the busy intersection located at Westchester Avenue, Bowman Avenue, and Monroe Place.

"It's confusing. You have a stop sign...nobody knows where it's aimed at. No yield sign...People come speeding. The stop sign is a mere suggestion," said resident Bill Multer.

A News 12 crew observed numerous drivers appearing to speed and roll through the present stop signs on Monday, even with pedestrians nearby.

Residents in the area are calling for clearer signage and safer roads, for both drivers and pedestrians.

While Westchester Avenue is a county-owned road, Port Chester officials say the intersection has been on the village's agenda since around 2022.

Village Manager Stuart Rabin says the village supports installing a four-way traffic light.

"Right now, Westchester County has begun their project, their capital improvement project, for improving curbing, sidewalks, pedestrian improvements, and new lighting for Westchester Avenue," he said.

However, the village announced in December, "the improvement was not approved by Westchester County as part of the current project scope."

In a statement, a county spokesperson says, "We continue to evaluate the needs of county roads."
