Part of the neighborhood was shut down Thursday after neighbors reported hearing gunshots.

A New Year's Day shooting in New Cassel leaves one man dead, Nassau County police said.

Police responded to a call of a person who had been shot Thursday at 2:05 a.m. on Railroad Avenue near Siegel Street. When officers arrived, they found a 40-year-old male victim.

The unidentified man was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

One neighbor said he had just arrived home when the incident unfolded.

“I’m hearing people yelling at the house over there and then I heard some gunshots and lots of cop cars and three ambulances,” Nesley Altine said.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
