Long Island could be facing a shortage of multifamily housing, according to a new study that says demand could far outpace the number of available apartments and condominiums.
A report from the Long Island Index says Long Island will have 158,000 more households in 15 years.
Researchers say that number is 94,000 higher than the Island will be able to accommodate in that time.
"It's a lot easier to work towards 90,000 units in multifamily housing than it is in single-family homes," says Peter Elkowitz, of the Long Island Housing Partnership.
Elkowitz says multifamily units are what more Long Islanders want.
"More flexibility to go out and walk to the corner store to pick up milk or coffee or breakfast and be able to not be tied to a car," he says.
