"Congressman Donald W. Norcross was transferred to Cooper University Health Care on Monday, April 7th following a medical incident," said Dr. Eric Kupersmith, chief physician executive at Cooper University Health Care.
"He was diagnosed with a gallbladder infection known as cholangitis that had progressed to sepsis."
Norcross' offices in New Jersey's First Congressional District and in Washington, D.C. remain open while he recovers.
He is in "regular contact with members of his staff and is monitoring circumstances in the Capitol and in the district," according to the release.
