Elected officials and members of law enforcement gathered with heartbroken family members on Friday calling for the passage of Nick’s Law, which would increase penalties for those who flee the scene of a deadly hit-and-run incident.

Christopher Hlavaty’s mother pleaded for passage of the law less than two weeks since her son was killed in a hit-and-run in Patchogue.

The law is named for Nick Puzio, who died in Patchogue last year after being hit by two different drivers, both of whom fled the scene.
