The South Nassau Water Authority held its third public meeting Monday regarding a possibly public takeover of Liberty Water.
Lynbrook and Merrick residents are demanding a switch of utility companies, arguing that their water bills are too high.
Liberty Watery proposed a 35% rate hike, saying it is needed for infrastructure improvements.
Legislators say multiple studies are underway to figure out if a public takeover could be more affordable.
“I want to make sure if a public entity takes over that we are not paying twice as much five years down the road,” says Rep. Brian Curran, of state assembly district 21.
Liberty’s rate hike would have to be approved by the State Public Service Commission.
