A woman and her car ended up in the Massapequa Preserve Thursday after hitting a bicyclist, police say.

The accident occurred just before 10 a.m. when the 74-year-old woman swerved to avoid hitting people in the crosswalk, according to the Massapequa Fire Department. They say she accidently hit the gas instead of the brakes and hit a 70-year-old man riding a bike crossing North Linden Street.

An off-duty firefighter who happened to be in the area jumped into the water to get the woman out of the car, which wound up in the water.

The bicyclist was taken to the hospital.
