Suffolk County police say a teenager was killed and five others were injured in a car crash Saturday night in Port Jefferson Station.
Officers say 18-year-old Christopher Ospina was driving a 2019 Honda Accord eastbound on Nesconset Highway when he tried to turn left on Woodhull Avenue. He was struck by a 2022 Ford Bronco around 9:30 p.m.
A backseat passenger in the Honda, 16-year-old Isaac Ruiz, of Medford, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Ford, 19-year-old Taner Ustaoglu of Miller Place, and Ospina were taken to the hospital.
Three other passengers in the Honda, 16-year-old Jordan Hatal, 15-year-old Joseph Marzano and 17-year-old Alexa Angelis, were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the hospital.
The cars involved in the crash were impounded for safety checks.
Residents tell News 12 the deadly accident has devastated the community.
“I feel very sad for the family,” said Carolyn Sagliocca, a mother of three. “It’s a sad day.”
Sagliocca says the Nesconset Avenue intersection where the crash occurred is dangerous.
“I had predicted that this might happen,” she said. “This is the only traffic light that does not have a red left turning signal, so you’re literally taking your life in your hands.”
Resident Paul Sagliocca also hopes a red turn signal is added to the area.
“There are no sight lines to see where you’re going. For an inexperienced driver, it is treacherous,” he said.
