Police say they were forced to fire upon a man in Freeport Saturday, but the family of the suspect is demanding answers. According to police, just after 1 a.m. someone called 911 and said they saw a man walking on Leonard Avenue with a gun in a black bag. Police say when two Freeport officers arrived, the man pulled the gun out and pointed it at officers. Detective Lt. Michael Fleming says officers fired nine shots, six of which hit the suspect, 21-year-old Frantz Byer.
Fleming says forensic evidence supports the account of the officers. However, Byer?s family members say that he was shot in the back and didn?t have a gun.
Byer is at the hospital in critical condition and is under arrest on assault and weapons charges.
