Security footage from a home in Hampton Bays helped police arrest two people accused of stealing holiday packages from recipients' front porches.
Video taken Monday at a home on Argonne Road shows a man swiping a few packages from the porch and running to a getaway car. The real-life Grinch even has a cigarette dangling from his lips.
"That homeowner notified us immediately and, at the same time, posted the video on Facebook," says Chief Steven Skrynecki, of the Southampton Town Police Department.
Skrynecki says the video went viral, generating an anonymous tip that led police to a house in Bridgehampton, where they say they found their suspect.
Police say they found a car at that home that matched the one in the video and a man who was wearing the exact same clothing.
"We were able to respond to that location, and we found the car that fit the description, found the individual who you saw very clearly depicted in the video," Skrynecki says.
Police arrested Pasquale Decicco and his girlfriend and alleged getaway driver, Christen Fleming. They face charges in connection to the Argonne Road theft and two others in the neighborhood.
Police say they've recovered most of the stolen packages, including a pair of children's boots and a walking cane.
"No one should have things they work hard for stolen from them," says Sandy Sullivan, who leads the neighborhood watch group in Hampton Bays.
Police say the surveillance video has also generated a tip about the suspects possibly committing a similar crime at a house in Moriches. That case is under investigation.
