A school bus with 37 kids aboard was rear-ended by a box truck Monday while traveling on Flanders Road in Riverhead, police say.
Southampton police say the driver of the box truck suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital. The driver of the school bus suffered minor injuries.
"We had numerous children that were injured in the school bus," says Mark Dunleavy, Flanders ambulance chief of operations.
Multiple rescue crews with ambulances, fire trucks and police helicopters responded to the scene around 4:45 p.m.
First responders say Flanders Road is a busy major road to and from the Hamptons.
"We do receive a lot of accidents on that road," says Dunleavy.
Police worked with the Riverhead School District to safely reunite the children with their parents.
