A 31-year-old sanitation worker from Brentwood was fatally struck Wednesday afternoon by a motorcycle while on the job in Yaphank.
Police say the incident occurred just before 12:15 p.m. on Long Island Avenue.
Police say the motorcycle was speeding and struck Marlon Jovel, who was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
The motorcyclist – 26-year-old Blaise Porter, of Yaphank – is in critical condition. The motorcycle was impounded for a safety check.
It was not immediately known if Porter would face any charges.
Long Island Avenue was closed for hours between Gerard Road and Patchogue Yahphank Road while crews cleared the scene. It has since reopened.
