Police are urging people to be alert and aware amid the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping.

Suffolk County Deputy Chief of Patrol Robert Cassaine recommends making sure purchases are not visible in the car to avoid becoming a victim of theft. Cassaine also says shopping in pairs is smarter than shopping solo.

Nassau County staged officers in stores like Best Buy on Thursday night when the doorbusters began to reduce the chances of petty crime. Cassaine says a strong officer presence deters thieves.

Shoppers are also advised to park their cars in a well-lit area so that they can return to them safely.
