A man was fatally shot and a woman was injured while they were inside a car in Central Islip late Saturday, police say.
According to Suffolk County police, bullets were fired from a vehicle into a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta going southbound on Carleton Avenue. The bullets hit Rahsaan Pressley and a 24-year old woman in the backseat.
Police say they were called to the scene at around 11:30 p.m. They say it happened near the intersection of Hoppen Drive, and it caused Carleton Avenue to be closed in both directions through Sunday afternoon.
Detectives believe the people who were shot at were targeted.
The incident comes after police reported a 22% increase in shootings in Suffolk County earlier this month.
Pressley was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead. The woman was also treated there and later released.
No arrests have been made in connection to the shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
