A man exchanged gunfire with officers who responded to reports of an intoxicated man inside his Lake Ronkonkoma home early Wednesday, police say. The man was later found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When police arrived, the man retreated back into his Wiggins Street home. Shortly after, officers heard gunshots from within the home.

Emergency Service Section officers made entry into the home and found the man dead.
