A man has been arrested in connection with a Blue Point hit-and-run that left a popular resident seriously injured.
Suffolk police say Robert A. Xavier, of Selden, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury.
Police released a video Monday showing a vehicle that was believed to have hit and critically injured 74-year-old Franny Columbine on April 6. It happened at the intersection of Blue Point Avenue and Middle Road.
Family and friends say Columbine was riding his bicycle to Firehouse Deli, as he does daily, when he was struck.
An outpouring of support came from family, friends and neighbors with lawn signs, phone calls and Facebook messages.
"If you're 15 or 85 in Blue Point -- he's the man. He's the unofficial mayor of this town," says Tom Cavanaugh, a friend of the victim.
