Police were forced to shoot one dog and capture another after the animals threatened and attacked people near the Broadway Mall.
The dogs had escaped from their owner’s Sackett Street home shortly before 4:30 p.m. Authorities say the two German shepherds bit two elderly women on James Street. The women were bit on the face and hands.
The dogs then entered a house on William Street and bit a man in the leg before threatening seven other people in the living room. The dog lunged at a child and an adult holding the child, police say.
An officer opened fire and killed the dog at that point. Police say the second dog escaped through a back door but was captured by the Hicksville Fire Department. It was taken to the Oyster Bay Animal Shelter.
The three people who were bit were treated at a hospital and are expected to be OK.
The dog owner will face charges for having loose dogs and failure to keep the dogs under control.
